Social Media Management (SMM) offers support to connect WhatsApp Business accounts. We provide an easy step-by-step flow to help you request a WhatsApp phone number and Business account that integrates with Engage. Furthermore, we maintain end-to-end encryption and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance.
Requirements for connecting a WhatsApp phone number
Connecting WhatsApp to Social Media Management requires you to:
Create a WhatsApp Business portfolio and account.
Create a WhatsApp phone number linked to the Business account or portfolio to verify your account.
Our channel connection flow will walk you through the above steps if you do not yet have a WhatsApp Business account or phone number.
Note: A WhatsApp Business account must be created under a Meta Business Suite account. Therefore, you will need an existing Meta Business Suite account and need to be an Admin of the account to create a WhatsApp Business account.
Note: WhatsApp has some requirements for the type of phone number that can be used. There are also certain requirements for what the display name of your number can be. We recommend reviewing WhatsApp's articles on picking a phone number and a display name, as well as their Commerce Policy.
Tip: Once you register a phone number with a WhatsApp Business account, it is possible to migrate that phone number to another WhatsApp Business account under certain conditions. Please refer to Meta's help center article on migrating phone numbers between WhatsApp Business accounts to learn more.
Connecting a verified WhatsApp Business account to SMM
To connect your WhatsApp account to SMM, follow the below steps.
In Social Media Management's left-hand navigation sidebar, click the Manage settings (gear) icon in the bottom left and select Channel admin.
Click Connect Channel in the top right.
Select WhatsApp and click Continue.
You can either connect your own WhatsApp account, or invite another user without Brandwatch access to connect their channel. To proceed with connecting your own WhatsApp account, click Connect to WhatsApp.
When the login popup appears, provide your Facebook (Meta) account authentication credentials.
After authentication, click Continue.
The following step will prompt you to select an existing Business portfolio with a WhatsApp Business account, or create a new one. If creating a new Business account, provide the information Meta requires to create your Business portfolio and account.
Note: While it is not required to have a verified Meta business to connect WhatsApp channels to Brandwatch, we recommend going through the verification process to reduce the risk of channel interruptions. Please see Meta’s documentation on how to complete the verification process.Once you select your Business account, you will need to request a new WhatsApp phone number from Meta or verify an existing one.
Tip: You can also onboard a WhatsApp phone number that you are currently using in the WhatsApp Business mobile app. Please visit the section below for steps to onboard a phone number from the WhatsApp Business mobile app.
When creating a new phone number, selecting Use display name will generate a virtual +1-555-* phone number as your phone number. Meta will need to verify your business and the process can take up to five business days.
Select Add a new number to create and verify a new WhatsApp phone number. You will need access to the device and you can choose to receive a text message or phone call to verify the number.
Lastly, you can choose to connect an existing WhatsApp phone number. Depending on whether or not you have connected the number to Brandwatch previously, you may need to verify the number again. You can verify the number by receiving a text message or phone call.
After adding your phone number, review the permissions you’ll be granting to Brandwatch and click Confirm to continue.
You will be redirected back to Social Media Management to finalize the connection. Select the desired WhatsApp phone number and continue.
Depending on if you connected your phone number to Brandwatch previously, you may need to create or verify your 6-digit two-step verification pin for your WhatsApp phone number. This pin number is created and managed by you in your Meta Business portfolio settings. Please see our FAQ below for steps on accessing your pin number in your Meta portfolio.
In the final step, select your team access for the channel.
Once complete, your WhatsApp channel will be connected to Social Media Management and you're ready to start using your WhatsApp message templates in Engage.
Onboarding a phone number from the WhatsApp Business mobile app
After authenticating your WhatsApp account in Social Media Management channel connection flow, click Continue.
When you are prompted to select a Business account to use, select Connect a WhatsApp Business app.
Input your phone number.
The WhatsApp Business mobile app where you use the phone number will show you a confirmation message. Click Connect > Connect to the Business Platform.
Tip: You will have the option to share 6 months of chat history. If you do so, we will sync data so you can continue ongoing conversations in Engage. New messages will show up in Engage even if you don’t share the history.
Enter the verification code from the connection flow in Social Media Management into your mobile app.
Tip: Alternatively, click Use a QR code instead to scan a QR code.
Once complete, complete the process in Social Media Management by selecting your desired WhatsApp phone number to use and entering in your 6-digit pin if needed.
FAQs and troubleshooting
Are WhatsApp Channels and WhatsApp Groups supported
No, SMM currently doesn’t support WhatsApp Channels and WhatsApp Groups.
It only supports direct phone number communication between a business number and another phone number.
How do I disable or reset the two-step verification pin for a phone number?
You can reset your WhatsApp two-step verification pin number in your WhatsApp Business portfolio.
Warning: We do not recommend disabling the two-step verification pin for your WhatsApp phone number as this can cause connection issues with your channel.
From your WhatsApp Business portfolio, select WhatsApp accounts > select your account > WhatsApp Manager.
Select the phone number, then click on the Two-step verification tab to reset your pin.
How do I remove Brandwatch’s access to my phone number?
You can remove Brandwatch’s access to your WhatsApp phone number by going to your Meta Business Manager and selecting Integrations > Connected Apps > Brandwatch. Then, either remove Brandwatch’s access to your WhatsApp Business Profile or remove Brandwatch’s access to all assets.
Is there any additional cost to using WhatsApp?
There is no additional cost to using WhatsApp directly with Brandwatch, but Meta might charge you depending on the types and frequency of your messages. Please see Meta’s page about pricing and billing, and pricing information.
You can add a credit line to your WhatsApp Business Account through the Meta Business Manager:
I’m already using the WhatsApp Business mobile app, can I keep using it?
Yes, it is possible to use the mobile app and Brandwatch to manage your WhatsApp conversations. Please see our steps above for onboarding a phone number from the WhatsApp Business app.
Can I start using the WhatsApp Business mobile app after creating the WhatsApp Business Account in the Meta Business Manager and connecting the number to SMM?
No, it is not possible to start using the mobile app while the phone number is registered to a WhatsApp Business account. You need to delete the phone number from the WhatsApp Business Manager, wait about a day for Meta to process your deletion, register the phone number using the WhatsApp Business mobile app, then reconnect your phone number in SMM.
Temporarily your phone number won’t be reachable in WhatsApp (between the deletion and re-registering it in the mobile app). The channel will also be duplicated in SMM after the reconnection. Please note that these limitations are imposed by Meta.
I can’t see historical messages.
We can only load historical messages if those messages are in the WhatsApp Business mobile application, and you have allowed it during the connection flow.
Please remove Brandwatch's access to WhatsApp, then reconnect your channel in SMM, making sure to share chat history as demonstrated in the steps above.
I received a “Couldn’t verify your information” error during the connection flow.
You may receive a “Couldn’t verify your information” error during the Meta account authentication process. This is an authentication issue on Meta’s side.
You can try removing Brandwatch’s access from the Meta Business Manager, then attempting to reconnect the channel.
The issue can also be caused by Meta not supporting having WhatsApp phone numbers with ongoing WhatsApp Business mobile app registrations, and “SMM-Only” phone numbers in the same Meta Business.
