About Estimated Reach (Online)

Tip: See our Estimated Reach (Online) glossary section for definitions of our metric abbreviations.

The Estimated Reach (Online) metric measures the unique reach of online articles or web pages based on estimated visibility and click-through rates.

The formula is:

Estimated reach (Online) = Unique visitor daily (UVD) x Visitor frequency rate x On-site click-through rate (CTR) x Social shares multiplier

Unique visitor daily (UVD): The number of unique visitors within a certain period. This is a metric, derived internally by our data science team by the following formula:

UVD = ((𝑉𝑑⋅𝑊)+𝑉𝑚) ⋅𝛾 where:

Vd is the unique monthly visitors from desktop from the previous month of data. (SimilarWeb data)

Vm is the unique monthly visitors from mobile from the previous month of data. (SimilarWeb data)

W is a factor accounting for if the post was created on a weekend or weekday. The values for each are: weekend = 0.93, weekday = 1.028.

𝛾 is a factor converting from monthly to daily, and has a value of 0.058.

Visitor frequency rate: Probability of at least one visit coinciding while an article is on the main page (e.g. for New York Times, this is estimated at 0.454).

On-site click-through rate (CTR): The percentage of visitors clicking on news-related content, with an industry average of 4.5%.

Social shares multiplier: Accounts for the extended reach driven by social sharing. This factor is derived from:

  • Media social shares per article: On average, each article is shared approximately 4 times (based on a random sample of 150,000 articles).

  • Readership per share: The estimated readership impact per share is 0.42, leading to an effective reach multiplier of 4 × 0.42 = 1.68.

For example, if the UVD for the New York Times (NYT) is 3,000,000, the formula would look like this:

Estimated reach (Online) = 3,000,000 × 0.454 × 0.045 x 1.68 = 102 967

This results in approximately average 3.43% of the UVD.

Where can I find Estimated Reach (Online) in Listen?

If you have Estimated Reach enabled in your Listen account, you will find it under your dashboard engagement metrics (e.g. Total Reach widget and the Reach field on individual mentions).

Note: Once Estimated Reach becomes enabled in your Listen account, Reach values may become available for networks where Reach was previously unavailable or shown as 0.

Existing Reach values may change because the calculation methodology varies by network and media type.
