Important Changes to Non-owned Facebook Pages Data

On August 19, 2024 Meta implemented a change to the Graph API, which we use for Facebook data collection. Unfortunately, this change has significantly impacted our ability to collect comments from non-owned Facebook Pages. This article aims to inform you about the impact of this change on your data and what steps we are taking to move forward.

What happened?

On August 19, 2024, Meta made an unannounced update to the Graph API. This update affects our ability to collect comments from Facebook Pages that your organization does not own. As a result, no comment data will be collected from non-owned Facebook Pages from August 19, 2024 onwards.

This is an industry-wide, global change affecting all platforms using the Graph API for data collection. It is not specific to our services and impacts all companies relying on Facebook's API.

How does this impact you?

Comments from non-owned Facebook Pages will no longer appear in your Brandwatch Listen Researches' Dashboards, Exports, and Reports from August 19, 2024 onwards.

What is unaffected?

  • Facebook owned data is completely unaffected and Facebook non-owned post data and metadata is also unaffected (e.g. likes/shares/comment aggregates can still be seen).
  • The Facebook public data source is unaffected, since that data source provided access to posts from non-owned Pages, never comments.
  • This change was only made for Facebook, so this change doesn't impact Instagram in any capacity.
  • You will still be able to see metadata for Facebook public posts, so you will be able to see aggregated numbers for engagements (e.g. likes/shares/comments) on a Facebook post.

What are we doing about it?

Our Engineering team is actively exploring potential workarounds to continue collecting comments from non-owned Facebook Pages. We will keep you updated on our progress and notify you of any changes or new solutions that become available.
